Butterfly
Stephen de Villiers, Chloe Gardner
Vivienne lives a relatively sheltered life with her mother. When Vivienne wakes up alone and injured on a cliff side lookout, she must journey home to reunite with her mother. When Vivienne eventually reaches her home, she finds it is empty - filled only with memories of her mother and, through a series of flashbacks, it is revealed that Vivienne has defiantly run away from home. Vivienne must find a way to tell her mother where she is and prove that a mother-daughter bond transcends reality before she runs out of time.

Seoungho Cho
In Butterfly, Seoungho Cho pursues an associative connection between a Buddhist drumming ritual and the pulsing drum solo in Iron Butterfly's famous psychedelic rock song "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida." Cho's mesmerizing documentation of the Buddhist ritual furthers the association by framing the drummer so that his movements resemble those of a butterfly beating its wings in air. The unexpected intermixing of the meditative drumming and Iron Butterfly's iconic hard rock classic adds introspective depth to a visually minimalist video.

This video series is based on Shasei-cho, a sketchbook by Okyo Maruyama (1733-1795, Japan). The Shasei-cho was copied by various other artists and became a fundamental reference for how Japanese perceive and record the natural world. 蝶 Butterfly was created by photographing actual butterflies in super-slow motion with reference to the composition and drawing style of the Shasei-cho. Each movement is a reflection of the butterfly's behavior, characteristics and personality at the time. This work is a modern-day Shasei-cho that I observed and recorded based on the techniques of the great painters of the past.

Nam June Paik
The exuberant irreverence and wit of Butterfly characterizes Paik's stream-of-consciousness visual and conceptual techniques. In a vibrant image/music collage, he ironically juxtaposes high-cultural artifacts (the aria from Madame Butterfly), contemporary avant-garde icons (Laurie Anderson) and Eastern symbols (the butterfly), within a rapid-paced proliferation of vividly computerized visual effects. This abbreviated work is classic Paik.

José Luis Cuerda
The film centres on Moncho and his coming-of-age experience in Galicia in 1936. Moncho develops a close relationship with his teacher Don Gregorio who introduces the boy to different things in the world. While the story centres on Moncho's ordinary coming-of-age experiences, tensions related to the looming Spanish Civil War periodically interrupt Moncho's personal growth and daily life.

Doug Wolens
Living in an ancient redwood tree for more than two years to prevent the tree from being clear-cut, Julia Butterfly Hill captured our hearts and minds by showing us that one person can make a difference. Through interviews with Hill, filmmaker Doug Wolens paints a portrait of an intensely spiritual and articulate woman who encountered both beauty and horror (she was assaulted by lumber company helicopters at one point) during her time above ground.
