In 1930s Oklahoma, Margaret Bellum struggles to maintain her family on a drought-stricken farm, grappling with the recent death of her youngest daughter, Ada. With her husband Henry away for work, Margaret cares for her two daughters, Rose and Ollie, who is deaf and mute. One night, while reading a dark story about a man who kills his family, strange events begin to unfold.

Margaret encounters a mysterious drifter named Wallace, who claims to have known Henry. Despite her initial mistrust, she allows him to stay after he performs miraculous feats. As Wallace's presence seems to improve their lives, Margaret uncovers unsettling truths about him, leading her to paranoia and isolation.
