2021He is a recipient of the Best Director Award at the 48th Kerala State Film Awards for Ee.Ma.Yau, Best Director Award at the 50th Kerala State Film Awards for Jallikattu, Best Film Award at the 44th Kerala Film Critics Association Awards for Jallikattu and twice recipient of Silver Peacock for the Best Director at the 49th International Film Festival of India and 50th International Film Festival of India for his films Ee.Ma.Yau and Jallikattu respectively. He also received the Silver Crow Pheasant Award at the International Film Festival of Kerala 2018. He is widely considered to be one of the most important and influential filmmakers of present Indian Cinema.

A group of Malayali travellers were returning to Kerala by bus after their visit to Velankanni. They all doze off in a lazy nap after lunch. Like a traveler who forgot his destination, James stops the bus in a village in Tamil Nadu. He starts to speak in Tamil like a native of the place, Sundaram, and behaves like him, confusing all who came with him and the villagers alike. He walks amidst faith, delusion, dream and trance, followed by others.
