Derrick Beckles
2021Beckles spent the majority of his teenage years in Toronto punk bands including Black Jello, who were well known for being banned from every possible live venue in Toronto. He began experimenting with film making with two high school friends, which included the filming of him visiting white supremacists in their home. These early filming endeavors led to him studying film at Concordia University. Soon after, Beckles began working with and shaping what was then a ten-page weekly called The Voice of Montreal, which grew into VICE Magazine.
Beckles became a familiar face on Canadian TV while occasionally doing stand-up in Toronto and New York. He produced and directed a hit festival documentary called Strip Club DJs and was a reporter on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos.

Strip Club Dj's
Derrick Beckles
"Strip Club Djs is the kind of diamond in the rough that any documentary fan loves to uncover. And it's not the film you expect it to be. Director Derrick Beckles' unflinching look at Djs in the seedy world of strip clubs is, in turn funny, disturbing and brilliant." -Hot Docs

If you think in the terms of pizza slices you will not believe some of the toppings on this “Cringe lovers delight” If you think in terms of “Should I get this or not?” think, “Should.”

A Sore for Sighted Eyes
Derrick Beckles
Imagine living in a world where hundreds of colorful balloons create a backdrop for a bizarre but stirring speech by a mincing health guru. Imagine a place where charlatans speak to the dead but sound like they are acting in a WWF skit. A world where a preacher turns into a jetfighter from Top Gun. A place where fire hydrants swear at children. Well stop imagining because that WHOLE world is in the palm of your hand. Introducing the 5th installment in a series of delicious TV CARNAGE MEALS.

Derrick Beckles
1996's “Ouch Television My Brain Hurts” is the first in a series of “TV Carnage” video collages wherein a mentally ill boy painstakingly manipulates the controls of two junked VCRs, and converts hundreds of hours of terrible television into 72 minutes of comedy gold.
