Sean Baker (born February 26, 1971, in Summit, New Jersey) is an American film director best known for his independent films depicting the lives of sex workers, such as Starlet (2012), Tangerine (2015), The Florida Project (2017), Red Rocket (2021), and Anora (2024). His latest film won the Palme d'Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Baker also created the puppet sitcom Greg the Bunny, which aired on Fox/IFC from 2002 to 2006, along with its spin-offs.

Baker grew up in Summit, New Jersey. His mother was a teacher, and his father, a patent attorney, represented Baker and his production company in 2005. He has a sister who is a synth-pop musician and production designer and has contributed to his films in both roles. Baker’s passion for filmmaking started young after his mother took him to a library screening of the Universal Monsters film series.

He graduated from Gill St. Bernard’s School in 1989 and later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Film from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Before attending NYU, he studied video editing at The New School in Greenwich Village.

Baker is married to Samantha Quan, who has produced several of his films.
