Агентов-убийц готовят к выполнению задания в специальной диверсионной школе. Здесь советские пленные солдаты используются как живой материал для обучения агентов немецкой разведки. Тренировку выдерживает только один из претендентов на особую роль в истории. Им оказывается беглый русский солдат Пётр Таврин. Тем временем, советской контрразведке «Смерш» становится известно о плане Гитлера. Создаётся специальная группа из лучших офицеров-разведчиков, которые должны не допустить, чтобы название «Китайская шкатулка» вошло в историю. За каждым из офицеров группы стоит человеческая судьба и свой опыт войны.
