The show took place on September 30, 2018, in Long Beach, California, United States at Walter Pyramid. This was the fourth NJPW show that the promotion produced independently in the U.S. and the second NJPW show to be held in the Walter Pyramid. The event was broadcast on AXS TV in the United States on delay, airing October 5, 2018.

Wrestle Kingdom 9 in Tokyo Dome was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by the New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) promotion, which took place at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan on January 4, 2015. It was the 24th January 4 Tokyo Dome Show and the first event on the 2015 NJPW schedule. The event featured ten professional wrestling matches and one pre-show match, six of which were for championships. In the double main event, Shinsuke Nakamura defended the IWGP Intercontinental Championship against Kota Ibushi, and Hiroshi Tanahashi defended the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Kazuchika Okada. The appearance of Pro Wrestling Noah wrestlers led to a storyline in which NJPW's Suzuki-gun group began wrestling at Noah events starting the week after Wrestle Kingdom 9. Through NJPW's partnership with Global Force Wrestling (GFW), the event was broadcast with English commentary as a GFW event.

All In was an independent professional wrestling PPV event promoted by Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks in association with Ring of Honor. The event took place on September 1, 2018, at the Sears Centre Arena in the Chicago suburb of Hoffman Estates, Illinois. While independently produced, the event featured wrestlers from NJPW, ROH, CMLL, IMPACT, AAA, MLW, and the NWA. The event was notable for being the first non-WWE or WCW promoted wrestling event in the United States to sell 10,000 tickets since 1993. The success of the event inspired the formation of All Elite Wrestling in January 2019.

The event took place on January 4, 2020, at the Tokyo Dome, in Tokyo, Japan. It was the 29th January 4 Tokyo Dome Show and the 14th promoted under the Wrestle Kingdom name. The main event of night one saw Kazuchika Okada defend the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Kota Ibushi. In other prominent matches, Jay White defended the IWGP Intercontinental Championship against Tetsuya Naito, the returning Hiromu Takahashi took on Will Ospreay for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, Jon Moxley fought Lance Archer in a Texas Death match for the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship and FinJuice (Juice Robinson and David Finlay) took on the Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa) for the IWGP Tag Team Championship.

It was the twenty-eighth January 4 Tokyo Dome Show and the thirteenth promoted under the Wrestle Kingdom name. The card was composed of ten matches, including one occurring on the pre-show. In the main event, Hiroshi Tanahashi fought Kenny Omega for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. In other prominent matches, Chris Jericho defend the IWGP Intercontinental Championship against Tetsuya Naito, Taiji Ishimori took on Kushida for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, Zack Sabre Jr. fought against Tomohiro Ishii for the British Heavyweight Championship, Jay White took on Kazuchika Okada, and Cody defended the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship against Juice Robinson.

The event featured eleven matches (including two dark matches), five of which were contested for championships. The event featured outside participation from All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) representative Keiji Mutoh, Pro Wrestling Zero1 representative Shinjiro Otani, and American freelancer Shelton Benjamin. For the first time in five years, the event did not feature wrestlers from Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). For the first time, the event was made available for international market on internet pay-per-view (iPPV).

For the first time in twenty years, the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) World Heavyweight Championship was defended during the event with NWA representative Rob Conway defending against Satoshi Kojima. The event was headlined by a double main event; Shinsuke Nakamura defending the IWGP Intercontinental Championship against Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kazuchika Okada defending the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Tetsuya Naito.

The event was originally planned to take place on June 6, but was postponed to the following day due to the state of emergency in Japan because of the COVID-19 pandemic, although the name of the event was not changed.
