Yorgos Lanthimos (born September 23, 1973, in Athens, Greece) is a Greek filmmaker known for his distinctive style and acclaimed works. He has won a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe, with five Academy Award nominations to his name.

Lanthimos began his career in experimental theatre before directing his first film, My Best Friend (2001). He gained international recognition with the psychological drama Dogtooth (2009), which won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He transitioned to English-language films with The Lobster (2015), earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, followed by the psychological thriller The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017).

Lanthimos is known for his collaborations with actress Emma Stone, particularly in the films The Favourite (2018), Poor Things (2023), and Kinds of Kindness (2024). He received Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Picture for The Favourite and Poor Things, and won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival for Poor Things.

Born in Pagrati, Athens, Lanthimos is the son of Eirini, a shop owner, and Antonis Lanthimos, a former basketball player for Pagrati BC and the Greek national team. After an injury ended his own basketball career, Lanthimos studied film and television directing at the Hellenic Cinema and Television School Stavrakos in Athens.

Lanthimos married Greek-French actress Ariane Labed in 2013. The couple lived in London until 2021 and now primarily reside in Athens.
