2021He was the founder of a new school of film making in Malayalam cinema, along with Bharathan and P. Padmarajan, in the 1980s, which created groundbreaking films that were widely received while also being critically acclaimed. Known for his unconventional works, George is considered to be one of the directors who revolutionized Malayalam cinema in the 1970s and 80s, who is also regarded as one of the greatest film makers of Malayalam Cinema of all time along with Adoor Gopalakrishnan and G Aravindan.

The film is based on the story "Oru Gramathinte Athmavu" by P. J. Antony and depicts the life of the people of a central-Travancore village.

Govindan Kutty (Raghu) is a clown who works in the circus. He comes to his village looking for a bride. Sharada (Anjali Naidu) is impressed by his charms and seemingly rich lifestyle and agrees to marry him. When they reach back the circus after getting married, things however change considerably. Govindan is an insignificant figure there and is frequently ignored by everyone else. The frustrated Sharada meets a stuntman Vijayan (Mammootty) and gets close to him much to the discomfort of Govindan.

Kaimal and Susheela are leading a troubled married life. The latter is unsatisfied with the ignorance from her husband. Susheela, a mother of two children, indulges in a physical relation with a car mechanic named Giri. On an unfortunate day, she elopes with Giri to start a new life. After the incident, Kaimal is harassed by many of his friends and colleagues. Balan, a friend of Kaimal, helps him to get a relief. Balan tries to bring back Susheela, who was still having an unsatisfied life with Giri, to Kaimal's life. He arranges a meeting between Susheela and Kaimal in a beach. But, they found Kaimal dead after being stabbed by himself with a knife. K.G George finely portrays the human psychological trauma in this film.
