Laverne Cox (born May 29, 1972) is an American actress and LGBT advocate. She gained recognition for her role as Sophia Burset in Orange Is the New Black, becoming the first transgender person nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in an acting category. In 2015, she won a Daytime Emmy for producing Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word, making her the first trans woman to win the award. She also made history in 2017 as the first transgender person to play a transgender series regular on U.S. broadcast TV in Doubt.

Cox first appeared on VH1’s I Want to Work for Diddy and co-hosted TRANSform Me. In 2014, she was honored with GLAAD's Stephen F. Kolzak Award and became the first transgender person on the cover of Time magazine. She later appeared on Cosmopolitan South Africa's cover and became the first transgender person with a wax figure at Madame Tussauds.

Born in Mobile, Alabama, Cox was raised by a single mother and has an identical twin brother, M Lamar, who portrayed her character’s pre-transition version in Orange Is the New Black. Cox, who survived bullying and a suicide attempt as a child, studied creative writing and dance before shifting to acting. She has been widely recognized for her trailblazing work in advocating for transgender rights and gender equality, earning numerous awards and accolades, including an Honorary Doctorate from The New School.
