Трогательная история о маленьком Футяне и его сестрёнке Матико. Родители ребят очень бедны, но дети не унывают — они вместе бегают в школу и находят много интересного в жизни. Дети любят литературу и хорошо пишут сочинения. Услышав, что объявлен всемирный конкурс на лучшее сочинение, они решают принять в нём участие и пишут сочинение о том, что их школу хотят снести, а на её месте хотят построить военный завод, о том, как трудно живётся их родителям, как они бедны, но никогда не теряют бодрости духа и надежды. Сочинение ушло в Москву, и ребята с нетерпением ожидают решения. Но Футян не дождался ответа, он простудился и тяжело заболел. А так как на его лечение не было денег, маленький Футян умер, а вскоре пришёл и ответ — сочинению брата и сестры присуждена первая премия.

Lending money, job hunting for civilians and babysitting. All these things are usually not listed on a policeman's job description. But for the officers of this local police station, it‘s part of their daily routine. One day, patrolman Yoshii (Hisaya Morishige) finds an abandoned baby and a six year old girl standing in front of the station. When he's declined by the welfare office, orphanage and local health clinic to take them in, he decides to take care of them himself.

The victim is a woman who's said to have had sexual relations with the defendant. Four intertwined witnesses; a critic, Shirou's employee, a singer, and his wife, are all called to the stand. His destiny now lies in their hands.

Soichi's wife, Kuniko is devoted to her husband and together the couple runs the family farm. Their happy family life comes to an abrupt halt when Soichi's half-brother, Joji returns with his wife Masako after failing in a business.

In Meiji era Japan a sixth grade boy is smart, likable and confident and owing to his academic success liked by his teacher. Things are not going well at home, however, where his father does not work leaving the mother to toil . With the boy's family having no money he cannot progress his education and has to drop out of school. A neighbour, who is a bookstore owner, offers the family money to allow the boy to continue his schooling, but the father is too proud to accept and rebuffs the offer forcing the boy to work.
