Kanyasulkam is based on the famous Telugu play 'Kanyasulkam' written by Gurajada Appa Rao in 1892. The film is set during the Pre-Independence era in the Vizianagaram area of the Madras Presidency of British India. Gireesham, an educated conman, lives at the expense of Putakoollamma who runs a mess. He befriends a prostitute Madhuravani, to whom Ramappa Panthulu of Ramachandrapuram is attracted to. Ramappa Panthulu is an unmarried miser who is well known among the Brahmin community in Ramachandrapuram. In an attempt to earn good money, Ramappa Panthulu encourages a 60-year old man named Lubdhavadhanulu to remarry and suggests alliance with Agnihotravadhanulu of Krishnarayapuram. Agnihotravadhanulu agrees to perform the marriage of his nine-year-old daughter Subbamma to Lubdhavadhanulu, despite pleas from his wife Venkamma, so that he can grab money as 'Kanyasulkam'.

Zamindar Bhujangarao (Gummadi) has two sons. The elder son Raghunath Rao (Akkineni Nageswara Rao) born to his first wife is a retard. After her death, he married Rajeswari (Santha Kumari) and the couple has a son Nagendra Rao / Naagu (Jaggaiah) a man of vices. Impressed by the way Padma (Savitri) a village girl faced Naagu when he threatened to take their farm lands, the Zamindar fixes Naagu’s marriage with her. But Rajeswari vetoes the alliance and suggests to perform her marriage with Raghu. After marriage, Padma learns that Raghu became a retard due to the opium-fed during his childhood to put him to sleep by the maid, Ayamma (Vijayalakshmi).

Bhama Vijayam is a 1967 Indian Telugu-language swashbuckler film, produced by Somasekhar and Radha Krishna, and directed by C.Pulliah. It stars N. T. Rama Rao and Devika, with music composed by T. V. Raju. The film is based on Gollabhama (1947) which itself is based on the stories of Kaasi Majililu written in Telugu by Madhira Subbanna Deekshitulu.
