Esmat Kazem runs a smuggling operation between Egypt and Lebanon, using his cabaret in Cairo as a front. Ibrahim, the smuggling ring's operative in Beirut, is murdered over a dispute with Esmat. The police relay the news of the murder to Ibrahim's sister Lamia, a former singer at Esmat's cabaret and an old flame of Esmat's. When she learns of her brother's death, she decides to avenge her brother's murder by co-operating with the police and bringing down Esmat's smuggling ring.

This run-of-the-mill romantic comedy-drama is set in a university in Cairo and begins with a professor and a young student about to be married. Just at that point, their wedding is interrupted by the rest of the movie, which happens to be an extended flashback. At issue is whether the couple can actually marry or not because unless a few big questions can be answered in the negative, they are actually brother and sister. So the story segues into the love life of a gifted writer as he is caught between his desire for a beautiful young woman and his feelings for his wheelchair-bound wife.

In Egypt forties and before the 14th of July revolution in 1952, a poor family lives in a prince's palace where the father works as a gardener. The family has two children Ali and Hassan. Ali grows up liking the prince's daughter who loves him too. Now grown ups, they realize how impossible this love story is. Joining the army, Ali fights in Palestine while the brother joins the police and is part of the King's guards. Ali gets back from Palestine and joins the secret military movement that will soon rule Egypt, The Free Officers. The revolution starts and the Free Officers are now in charge, putting Ali against his brother as a guard for the king and also against his lover, the prince's daughter as the revolution will confiscate all her family's wealth.
