Фильм по мотивам ранних рассказов Всеволода Иванова о гражданской войне. Комиссару Селиванову и нескольким красноармейцам удаётся бежать из плена. Их преследуют белогвардейцы и басмачи во главе с полковником, которого в своё время освободил под честное слово Селиванов. Спасаясь, красноармейцы захватывают тачанку, в которой находят грудного ребёнка, и рискуя жизнью, делают всё, чтобы спасти его. Гибнут красноармейцы, безнадежно положение Селиванова. Их мужество, беспредельная преданность делу революции потрясли полковника, который, осознав всю бесперспективность борьбы против народа, кончает жизнь самоубийством.
