Появляются финны и начинают поспешно готовить артиллерийские позиции. Завязывается бой. Оставшийся на чердаке Байков, отбиваясь от врага, умело корректирует направление огня своей части, но вскоре получает тяжелое ранение.

Перепуганная тем, что старые грехи станут всем известны, старуха удовлетворяет требования Грознова — уничтожает вексель Платона и разрешает внучке выйти за него замуж.
