О производственных отношениях и соцсоревновании. Главная героиня Марьяна Кудель, лучшая доярка колхоза «Труд», активно критикует консерватора председателя, и потому теперь она работает с самыми плохенькими коровами. Ей, очевидно, противопоставляется Катя Квитко - рекордсменка по надоям, которую всячески поддерживает председатель. Занятая парадной шумихой, Катя мало уделяет внимания работе, ссорится с влюбленным в нее зоотехником Василием, подругой Марьяной. В результате ее безалаберности погибает корова-рекордистка Волшебница. Марьянка же трудится с утра до позднего вечера и вскоре выходит на первое место. Катя же занимает всего лишь пятое. Самоотверженная Марьянка любит Василия, и, тем не менее, помогает ему и Кате снова найти друг друга...
