David Ayer (born January 18, 1968) is an American filmmaker known for his crime films set in Los Angeles, often dealing with gangs and police corruption. His notable screenplays include those for "Training Day" and "The Fast and the Furious." He has directed several films, including the superhero movie "Suicide Squad" and the urban fantasy film "Bright." Ayer has twice collaborated with actor Shia LaBeouf and frequently works with his friend Cle Shaheed Sloan, who has appeared in four of his films.

David Ayer, born on January 18, 1968, in Champaign, Illinois, grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota, and Bethesda, Maryland. After being kicked out by his parents as a teenager, he lived with his cousin in South Central Los Angeles, which inspired many of his films. Ayer dropped out of high school and worked as a house painter before enlisting in the U.S. Navy as a submarine sonar technician. He credits his Navy experience with contributing to his filmmaking career. His grandfather also served in the Navy in the 1950s.
