The film is inspired by the once spacious and luxurious hotels of the 1970s and 80s in the former Eastern Bloc. We enter a world whose glory days are now in the past and have lost their luster. Most of these hotels have been closed, renovated or demolished in the last few decades.

Gesamtschule
Arianne Olthaar
Images of a comprehensive school in West Germany that was built between 1972 and 1978. At the time it was very modern and progressive, both in the way of its education as well in its interior design. An example is the integrated disco in the cellar where up until today schoolchildren can dance during their lunch break.

Rathaus Ahlen
Arianne Olthaar
Images of the interior and exterior of the city hall in Ahlen (NRW, Germany) in its present state and in absence of people. Due to the lack of maintenance and altered ideas about design in public space, the city hall – once a showpiece – is no longer beloved and is threatened by demolition. The film ends with a number of slides that were made by the architect during the opening in 1974: visitors gaze with admiration at an unknown modernity.

The larger, luxury hotels built during the 1970s not only had a restaurant, a hair salon, a souvenir shop and a bar, but usually also a nightclub in the cellar. Almost all these have since been closed or renovated. This nightclub was filmed at the Luna Bar in Hotel Kyjev, Bratislava.
