Молодой учёный Джамал Захидов убеждён, что развалины древнего города Арана находятся на территории Азербайджана. Захидов добивается организации экспедиции в район предполагаемого им местонахождения Арана. Друг Захидова, молодой археолог Джалил, прекрасно знает и геологию. Породы, случайно найденные им у подножия Гызыл-Гая, по его мнению содержат ценные материалы. Но Имам-заде, тайный агент иностранной разведки, похищает эти образцы. Участники экспедиции знакомятся со стариком Муртузом. Старик узнает в Имам-заде сына Сулейман-бека, бывшего правителя здешних мест, который убил геолога Каримова, проводившего здесь в 1920 году изыскательские работы. Поняв, что он разоблачён, Имам-заде взрывает пещеру, стремясь уничтожить экспедицию. Но местные жители спасают участников экспедиции. Имам-заде задерживают сотрудники МГБ. В породах, найденных Джалилом на месте раскопок, был обнаружен уран...
