Alan was raised by her grandparents and later moved to Chengdu with her mother, where she completed her secondary education at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. Alan's name, meaning "heavenly maiden of the moon," was given by a Buddhist monk, and she later adopted the family name "A-Lan" from her parents' names for practical reasons.
