William "Bill" Francis Nighy, an English actor, was born on December 12, 1949, in Caterham, Surrey, a suburb of London. His mother worked as a nurse, and his father was a mechanic. The youngest of three children, Bill grew up with a passion for rock music, especially the Rolling Stones, and became involved in school theatre. After failing most of his final exams at age 16, he left for Paris with dreams of becoming a writer but soon returned to England. He worked various jobs, including in a psychiatric hospital, before attending the Guildford School of Acting.

Nighy began his career in theatre and gained recognition for his film roles in "Love Actually" and "Pirate Radio." He made his cinematic debut in 1981 and went on to appear in major productions like "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

Nighy was in a 27-year relationship with actress Diana Quick, with whom he shares a daughter, Mary, born in 1984. The couple separated in 2008. He also suffers from Dupuytren’s contracture, a condition that prevents him from fully extending his fingers on both hands.
