Marc Schrader, a rookie cop caught red-handed with drugs in a police raid of an illegal rave, joins a homicide investigation conducted by Chief Inspector Minks. The victim is a naked young woman with the skin stripped off her back, killed as she staggered into traffic. As Schrader and Minks investigate the murder, the case is complicated by a finger found in the stomach of the victim. Forensic examination proves the finger belongs to Nobert Günzel, who was previously convicted of rape and assault. The police raid Günzel’s residence, and discover a blood-stained table with restraints and bits of human flesh in his basement. They also find video equipment and preserved, tattooed skin from the victim’s back. Soon, they found dead bodies buried in the garden. Günzel then goes missing.

Financial Officer Katharina Kamp has to collect tax debts from the stud owner Carl von Balkhausen. She arranges a local appointment, but the grumpy squire ignores her. When Katharina unexpectedly loses her brother and his wife in an accident, she initially has very different worries. She lovingly takes care of her niece Lara, who survived the accident and now sits in a wheelchair indefinitely. By chance, Carls and Katharina's paths intersect again. He and his horses work wonders for Lara and Katharina.

Maria's life is upside down. After a traffic accident, nothing is the same. She has terrible nightmares and suddenly sees through strange eyes one night. They are the eyes of a serial killer who is up to mischief in the small town of Unna in the Ruhr area. When Maria goes to the police, you don't believe her, although the extensive search for the murderer has so far been unsuccessful. The situation worsens as Maria begins to fear her best friends. Slowly but surely she thinks she is going crazy.
