Xia Shouzhi, an old man over 80 years old, attends the funeral of another old man. One night, he calls his children home and announces that he does not wish to set up a grave or a monument after his death. His wish to be buried next to the family home without any funeral is met with strong opposition by his children.

Emma, an American-born Chinese studying in Shanghai, is depressed because of a breakup and a quarrel with her mother. While she is in a taxi, she chats with the driver who is an American growing up in Shanghai. She learns about how he put down roots in Shanghai and that he is fluent in the Shanghai dialect. They really click and there is chemistry between them.
