Stephen Edwin King (born September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine, USA) is an American author who writes across various genres, including horror, thrillers, fantasy, and drama. He is often referred to as the "King of Horror." Over 400 million copies of his books have been sold, resulting in numerous films, television series, and comics. King has published 65 novels, including seven under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, as well as five nonfiction books and 15 poetry collections. He has written over 200 short stories and 35 novellas, many of which are compiled in collections. Most of his works are set in his home state of Maine.

Stephen and his wife, Tabitha, own three homes: in Bangor, Lovell (Maine), and Sarasota (Florida). They have three children and four grandchildren.

In 1999, the satirical publication The Onion published a letter supposedly from King, claiming he couldn't remember writing Tommyknockers, poking fun at his prolific output. In the 1980s, he struggled with alcohol and drug addiction, eventually seeking help, and has remained sober since the late 1980s. His first novel after overcoming his addictions was Needful Things.

Tabitha King has written nine novels, and both of their sons are authors: Owen published a collection of stories in 2005, while Joseph Hillstrom King, known as Joe Hill, released a collection and a novel that is set to be adapted. Their daughter, Naomi, serves in a Unitarian Universalist church in Plantation, Florida.

King is a fan of baseball and the Boston Red Sox. He sponsored the construction of a stadium in 1992 and threw the first pitch at the opening of the Senior League World Series in 2002. In 2014, he participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise funds for ALS research.

Additionally, King performs with the rock band Rock Bottom Remainders, which covers popular songs.
