In late 1968, Kelly Jones, a deceptive advertising executive, uses her charm and con artist skills to influence male executives, aided by her assistant Ruby. Moe Berkus, a covert government operative working for President Nixon, offers Kelly a job to revamp NASA's public image, which has been struggling during the Space Race. Under threat of exposure, she reluctantly accepts and moves to Cocoa Beach, Florida, with Ruby. Upon arrival, Kelly has a chance encounter with Cole Davis, the launch director at the Kennedy Space Center. After a brief flirtation, Cole is surprised to discover Kelly is the new public relations hire. A serious Korean War veteran, Cole quickly clashes with Kelly's plans to revitalize NASA's image through corporate sponsorships and media-friendly tactics, disapproving of her manipulative methods, which she views as necessary "spin" for the agency's success.
