Rebana Liz John
2021Rebana John is an artist-filmmaker from Mumbai, India. Filmmaking became her primary medium while studying at the Srishti School of Art, Design, and Technology in Bangalore, India. Her extensive experience includes work as an assistant artist, a filmmaker, and a video team manager. She completed the Post-Graduate Program in Film/Media Art at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, Germany. Her short films, which include both fiction and documentary works, The Fortunate Son (2007), Lamentations (2008), Echoes (2008), and Pasts:Paths (2017), illustrate her experimentations in direction and documentary practices, which reframe established approaches and formats. The short, Ships Outside My Window (2018), has been shown at numerous film festivals, and won the Best Student Documentary Award at the Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival—India‘s only independent film festival—held in Delhi.

Rebana Liz John
The local train is a sight to behold in the morning, overloaded with crowds fighting to get inside. A special compartment reserved for women appears as a temporary oasis – a haven for solitude and contemplation. Director Rebana Liz John questions the women, who reveal what it means to keep ambitions alive within an oppressive patriarchal system. Black and white imagery evocatively captures the details of the women’s experience in this world. They reflect on their lives, across generations, with humour, disappointment and defiance, forming a complex tapestry whose common ground is endurance and survival.
