Martin Donovan (born Martin Paul Smith; August 19, 1957) is an American actor known for his frequent collaboration with director Hal Hartley in films like Trust (1990), Simple Men (1992), and The Book of Life (1998), where he played Jesus Christ. He also portrayed Peter Scottson in Showtime's Weeds and made his directorial debut with Collaborator (2011). Donovan appeared in Christopher Nolan's films Insomnia (2002) as Detective Hap Eckhart and Tenet (2020) as CIA handler Fay.

Born in Reseda, California, Donovan attended Crespi Carmelite High School and Pierce College, later studying at American Theater Arts in Los Angeles. In 1983, he moved to New York with his wife, actress Vivian Lanko, and joined the off-off-Broadway Cucaracha Theater. Donovan has also worked with Mary-Louise Parker in Saved!, Pipe Dream, and The Portrait of a Lady, winning the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actor for the latter.

Donovan and Lanko, who married in 1984, have two sons and lived in New York before relocating to Vancouver.
