Whenever people are released from their society's constraints, there is the possibility that they will behave badly, at least according to the rules of the society they have left behind. This seems to have been particularly the case for Europeans living in colonial establishments in Africa and Asia. In this drama, based on a story by Stefan Zweig, Dr. Steiner (Andrzej Seweryn) was caught with his fingers in the till at a German hospital. Rather than prosecute him, they gave him the option of emigrating elsewhere. He chose to serve at a clinic in a remote part of Portuguese Goa. He has been on his best behavior for years, but when the beautiful wife (Fanny Ardant) of a diplomat comes to him asking for an abortion, he is tempted to ask for sexual favors in return, and his life swiftly goes out of control.

The widowed furniture manufacturer Karl Ravinski is planning a merger in Mallorca, but the call girl Cora Talheim, which is to distract the wise businessman, warns him in the last second before the giant fraud. Ravinski is so fascinated by her charm and pride that he falls in love with her and spontaneously marries her. With that he disgusts his children Felix and Hella, who worry about their inheritance. Only the boyish Irene befriends Cora. But as Ravinski dies of heart failure and Cora escapes an assassination attempt, pushes Count Count on grim secrets behind the perfect family façade.

This is a family story that covers thirty years in the life of the Freytag family (narrated by the grandson, Robert). When his grandfather returns from Russia in 1949, he becomes part of the German "economic miracle" by producing garden gnomes. Klaus, Robert's father, wants to become a writer. He marries Gisela who almost immediately gets pregnant with Robert - but the marriage doesn't work. Both parents abandon the child, and Robert goes on living with both pairs of grand parents. While his father belongs to the 1968 generation that rebels against their fathers he falls in love with the neighbor's's daughter Laura.
