Chiwetelu Umeadi "Chiwetel" Ejiofor (born July 10, 1977, in Forest Gate, Greater London) is a British actor, director, and screenwriter. He is a nominee for the Academy Award and Emmy, as well as a five-time nominee for the Golden Globe. In 2000, Ejiofor received the Jack Tinker Award, and in 2001, he was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award. He has won numerous accolades for his role as Solomon Northup, a victim of slavery, in the historical drama "12 Years a Slave" (2013), including a BAFTA Award.

Ejiofor, of Nigerian descent, was born in London to an Igbo family. His father, Arinze Ejiofor, was a doctor, while his mother, Obiajulu Ejiofor, worked in pharmacy. At the age of 11, he was involved in a car accident in Nigeria with his father, who did not survive. Chiwetel survived the accident but was left with scars on his forehead.
