В богатом купеческом доме, словно птица в клетке, томится молодая красавица Вера Филипповна. В пятнадцать лет она вышла замуж за богача Каркунова. Теперь, когда дни Потапа Потапыча сочтены, хитрый и коварный приказчик Ераст плетет интригу вокруг Веры Филипповны, пытаясь опорочить ее в глазах мужа, дабы завладеть немалым капиталом. Кроме него, в доме Потапа Потапыча то и дело появляются сомнительные личности — сварливые кумушки, приживалки да разбойные люди. Но, как это часто бывает у Островского, добро и справедливость побеждают, да и сам Ераст из отрицательного персонажа становится вполне положительным героем, ведь у каждого из действующих лиц комедии Островского сердце не камень.

Their appearance greatly alarmed the leaders of the two rival gangs controlling the city. They are trying to get these valuable fighters into their ranks.
