Todd Phillips (born Todd Philip Bunzl; December 20, 1970) is an American filmmaker known for directing comedies like Road Trip, Old School, and The Hangover series. He gained wider recognition with the 2019 psychological thriller Joker, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and earned him three Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Long Island, Phillips attended NYU Film School but dropped out due to financial constraints. He briefly worked at Kim’s Video and appeared in HBO's Taxicab Confessions. Phillips has expressed disbelief in God but acknowledges a higher collective energy. He also shifted away from comedy, citing the challenges of "woke culture" as a reason for the decline in comedic films.
