Ab Dilli Dur Nahin is a journey of a small boy, Rattan, from his small village to New Delhi in the hope of meeting the Prime Minister of India and plead for his father's release from Prison. Set in 1951, Hariram lives in a small village with his wife Bela and son Rattan. On Diwali night, Bela dies of a snake bite and Hariram's world falls apart and he takes to Alcohol. Unable to pay bills, he threatens the Money Lender. Coincidentally the Money Lender is killed the same night and Hariram is tried and convicted of the crime. Rattan, now alone, gets help from Con-Man Ghasita and a young bunch of street children in his quest to reach New Delhi and free his father.

Narayan works as a laborer on the farmland owned by businessman, Ratan Kumar, in Ramnagar, who also has a rubber estate in Singapore. Although Narayan was an ex-convict, Ratan had assisted him getting a job, some land, and a small house where he now lives with his grown daughter, Gayetri, who used to work as a tutor/teacher. While bringing him his lunch one afternoon, Gayetri faints, and a woman tells him that she is pregnant. A shocked Narayan tries to find out who the father is, but Gayetri refuses to answer. He is all ready to beat the truth out, when Ratan intervenes, asks Narayan to take some money and re-locate, which Narayan gratefully does. They do re-locate and Gayetri gives birth to a baby boy, Narayan takes him to an orphanage donated by Ratan himself, and leaves him there, he returns home and lets Gayetri know that her child was still-born.

Brahmachari promises to get them together but asks money from her in return. Day and night he works on her appearance to make Ravi like her, but Brahmachari falls in love with her. When Ravi proposes to Sheetal, she realises she loves Brahmachari. He denies his love for her saying he wants to be big in life and marry a rich girl. When she tries to commit suicide again, he accepts her.
