Jonathan Daniel Hamm, born March 10, 1971, is an American actor best known for his role as Don Draper in Mad Men.

Hamm was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Deborah and Daniel Hamm, who ran a family trucking business. His parents divorced when he was two, and he lived with his mother in Creve Coeur, Missouri, until her death from cancer when he was 10. He then moved in with his father, who passed away a few years later when Hamm was 20. His teachers and friends helped him through this period.

Hamm attended the John Burroughs School, where he played football, baseball, and swam. His first role was Winnie the Pooh in first grade, and at 16, he played Judas in Godspell. After high school, Hamm briefly attended the University of Texas but left after his father’s death and transferred to the University of Missouri, where he acted in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream and the musical Assassins.

Hamm moved to Hollywood in 1995 with just $150, working as a waiter and attending auditions. It was difficult to find work until he landed a role in the TV show Providence in 2000. His film debut came in Space Cowboys (2000), followed by roles in Kissing Jessica Stein (2001) and We Were Soldiers (2002). Hamm was cast as Don Draper in Mad Men in 2007, chosen from over 80 candidates. He later appeared in The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008), 30 Rock (2009), and voiced a role in Shrek Forever After (2010).

From 1997 to 2015, Hamm was in a relationship with actress and writer Jennifer Westfeldt. Though he quit smoking at 24, Hamm smoked herbal cigarettes for his role in Mad Men.
