Raised in the Hindu faith, Patel speaks both English and Gujarati. His ancestors are from Jamnagar and Unjha in Gujarat. He grew up in the Rayners Lane area of Harrow and attended Longfield Primary School and Whitmore High School, where he played his first role in a school production of "Twelfth Night."
As a child, Patel often got into trouble, so his mother enrolled him in martial arts. He achieved significant success in taekwondo, earning a black belt and winning prizes in international competitions.
Patel dated Freida Pinto from 2009 to 2014. In 2017, he began dating Tilda Cobham-Hervey, whom he met on the set of "Hotel Mumbai." They moved to Adelaide in 2022, where Patel made headlines for breaking up a fight. Their first public appearance together was at the premiere of "Monkey Man" on April 2, 2024.
