Dev Patel (/ˈdɛv pəˈtɛl/; born 23 April 1990) is a British actor and filmmaker. He has won a British Academy Film Award and received nominations for an Academy Award and two Golden Globe Awards. In 2024, he was named one of Time's 100 most influential people in the world.

Patel began his career with a role in the teen drama "Skins" in 2007. He gained significant recognition with his performance in a 2008 drama, earning a BAFTA nomination. He further expanded his career with leading and supporting roles in various films and a television series from 2012 to 2014.

In 2016, Patel won a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor and was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in a drama. He continued to star in independent films and made his directorial debut with an action film in 2024.

Dev Patel was born in Harrow, London, to Kenyan-Indian parents. His mother, Anita, works as a caregiver, and his father, Raj, is an IT consultant. He has an older sister.

Raised in the Hindu faith, Patel speaks both English and Gujarati. His ancestors are from Jamnagar and Unjha in Gujarat. He grew up in the Rayners Lane area of Harrow and attended Longfield Primary School and Whitmore High School, where he played his first role in a school production of "Twelfth Night."

As a child, Patel often got into trouble, so his mother enrolled him in martial arts. He achieved significant success in taekwondo, earning a black belt and winning prizes in international competitions.

Patel dated Freida Pinto from 2009 to 2014. In 2017, he began dating Tilda Cobham-Hervey, whom he met on the set of "Hotel Mumbai." They moved to Adelaide in 2022, where Patel made headlines for breaking up a fight. Their first public appearance together was at the premiere of "Monkey Man" on April 2, 2024.
