Greg Berlanti was born in Suffern, New York, to Barbara Moller Berlanti and Eugene Berlanti. He graduated from Rye High School in 1989 and earned his degree from Northwestern University in 1994. Berlanti, of Italian and Irish descent, has a sister named Dina and two nieces. He described his early life as being among "Italians in a town of WASPs," and the Berlanti Productions logo pays tribute to his father, Gene, with the phrase "Greg, move your head!"
Berlanti has been in a relationship with former LA Galaxy player Robbie Rogers since 2013. They got engaged on December 31, 2016, and married on December 2, 2017. They have two children, a son born in 2016 and a daughter born in 2019, via surrogacy.
