Uprising

The 2024 film tells the story of two childhood friends, Cheon-yeong and Jong-ryeo, set against the backdrop of the Japanese invasions of Korea in the 16th century. Although they start off close, their lives take drastically different directions due to societal class divisions. Cheon-yeong, born a slave, is promised freedom if he excels in a national exam, but betrayal and a series of events push the friends to become adversaries.

Cheon-yeong becomes the leader of a volunteer militia fighting the Japanese forces, while Jong-ryeo serves as a high-ranking officer for King Seonjo. Their bond is torn apart by misunderstandings, betrayal, and loss, leading to a final confrontation in the midst of war. The film delves into themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the quest for freedom, offering a poignant reflection on class inequality and social injustice in medieval Korea.
