James Healy Jr., originally from Texas, began acting at 15 in local theater, securing his first agent and Screen Actors Guild membership with a line in the famous "Who shot JR?" episode of Dallas in 1980. He majored in theater and married Claire Barney-Healy in 1984.

To support his young family, James became a police officer in 1983, working in various roles including SWAT team member, detective, and sergeant, before serving as Chief of Police from 2008 until his retirement in 2016.

He moved to Los Angeles in 1995, landing roles on News Radio, Will & Grace, Judging Amy, and more. James also holds a master's degree in Criminal Justice and has taught at the University of Texas at Arlington. In 2006, he spent a year in Afghanistan training police after the war.

Since retiring from law enforcement, James has returned to acting full-time. His recent credits include Killers of the Flower Moon, Law & Order SVU, and A Thousand Tomorrows. James and Claire have a daughter, Jenny, born in 2003, and a son, James III, who passed away in 1986.
