Lauren Ambrose, born Lauren Anne D'Ambruoso on February 20, 1978, in New Haven, Connecticut, is an American actress, singer, and film producer. She is a two-time recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Award (2003, 2004) and has been nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards (2002, 2003) for her role as Claire Fisher in HBO's drama series Six Feet Under (2001–2005). Additionally, she was nominated for a Tony Award in 2018 and a Grammy Award in 2019 for her performance as Eliza Doolittle in the musical My Fair Lady (2018).

Ambrose's father, Francis Anthony D'Ambruoso (1947–2018), was a food supplier, while her mother, Anne Wachtel, worked as an interior designer. She has a younger brother named John D'Ambruoso and has Italian heritage on her father's side, and German, English, and Irish roots on her mother's side. She attended Choate Rosemary Hall and Wilbur Cross High School, and she is a trained opera singer, having studied vocal performance at the Tanglewood Institute at Boston University in the summers of 1994 and 1995.

Since September 2001, Ambrose has been married to photographer and cinematographer Sam Handel. They have two children: son Orson Halcyon Handel, born on January 16, 2007, and daughter Kiara Wild Handel, who was born in August 2012.
